The Oriya Inscriptions of Bamra

The Oriya inscriptions found on the stamps of Bamra state are among the least well-known of the eight different scripts that are used on the stamps of the Princely States. Most Indian scripts share common features, but Oriya is different especially from the widespread (Deva-)Nagari that occurs on the stamps of 25 states and seems to be suspended from a horizontal line. Oriya retains a feature from its original use when it was written on the leaves of the talipot palm with an iron stylus which avoided straight lines particularly in the horizontal direction so as not to split the leaf. The resulting flourishing curves look all alike and the distinguishing parts of the first issue are so small that they are difficult to read. Since reprints are described by Stanley Gibbons we need only be concerned with forgeries which are not difficult to recognize because the scroll always points to the left and its tail-end is not open but closed. Multiples with scrolls pointing in different directions are very scarce but always genuine.
